Thom Rawson is a sustainability leader and football fan.
He founded Sustainable Football in 2020, as an independent consultant on a mission to help football save the planet.
What is Sustainable Football?
Through Sustainable Football, I offer sustainability expertise to football organisations.
I’ve developed a Framework which guides football clubs to become more sustainable, and regularly publish guidance and content to show what sustainability means to football.
I also work directly with football clubs and organisations to help them become more sustainable.

How it started
Football has a unique ability to capture our imagination, unite communities and change society.
In October 2020, against a backdrop of footballers kneeling in support of Black Lives Matter, Marcus Rashford’s campaigning and the ascent of Forest Green Rovers, I was inspired to combine my passion for sustainability with my love of football.
I founded Sustainable Football as an independent consultant on a mission to help football save the planet.
Who is Thom?
I’m Thom. I used to dream of becoming a footballer but settled for saving the planet.
I like beer, tea, brunch, public transport and walks that last for hours.
I grew up in Basingstoke, which is where my Mum is from. My Dad is from Burnley, which is why we support Burnley FC. My best mate Jack and I run a London supporters club for Burnley.
I’m a sustainability leader, systems thinker and creative, named among edie’s 30 under 30 Class of 2020 for Sustainability Leaders.
Earlier this year, I became Chief Sustainability Officer at Hanwell Town FC, leading the development and implementation of the club’s sustainability strategy.
Previously, I was responsible for Heathrow Airport’s sustainability leadership strategy, Heathrow 2.0.
Since studying Geography at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall campus, I’ve also formed part of an award-winning energy management team, worked on one of the UK’s biggest infrastructure projects and trained with the SAS.
